“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”- James 1:22

What does it mean to be “doers of the word?”  The only proper response to the scriptures is to allow them to take root in your life.  Many sit in a pew on Sunday to hear an encouraging word that will make them feel better, and they leave their pew and go on with their lifestyle as if nothing happened.  Hearing profits when it leads to a transformed life.  Are we making a prayerful effort to change?

Obedience to the Christian life is a constant struggle.  Have we truly given everything over to Christ, or are we still holding on to the things of old?  We will fall, and we will have struggles, but do those around us notice the change in our lives?  If they don’t notice anything different about how we are living then we need to look in the mirror.  We are deceiving ourselves, because we very well may be treating our relationship with Christ as a hobby instead of the all encompassing thing it needs to be.  Jesus said that to be a disciple one must take up his cross daily and follow him (Luke 9:23).  Where is your cross today?
